Successful review: Mukran Port in the Year of the Rat

Sassnitz-Mukran, 12.02.2021 — Last year, after a successful test phase, the container connection between China and Europe via the Short Sea connection Mukran (Germany) - Baltiysk (Russia/Kaliningrad region) was established as a regular, stable and congestion-free connection with four departures a week in each direction. The connection to Scandinavia has been significantly improved with the cargo connection to Karlshamn (Sweden). Containers to and from China no longer have to take the diversions via Hamburg and Denmark to reach Sweden.

The handling of agricultural products has increased significantly, which has also increased the number of grain trains arriving in Mukran accordingly. Structures were changed at the Sassnitz city port and cooperation was strengthened, resulting in more synergies. Two locomotives were christened at the site Mukran last year. Further modern equipment for fast and smooth cargo handling was acquired.

Despite the Corona pandemic, a high-speed catamaran connection to Ystad in Sweden has been opened, which cuts journey times between Sweden and Germany by more than half compared to other passenger routes.

The Mukran Port team wishes all partners, acquaintances and friends a happy Chinese New Year and a wonderful time with the family. We seize this opportunity to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation for your support and attention to the Mukran Port Group in the past year and wish you good health and all the best in the New Year!

Good luck in the Year of the Ox!

Happy New Year!

Mukran's online presence this week

Sassnitz-Mukran, 29.01.2021 — What a busy week, packed with online events from various networks that connect Mukran Port with its competent partners!

At the start of the week, we took part at the German-British Logistics Forum. At the event organized by the "Logistics Alliance Germany e.V." association, questions and solutions on the effects of Brexit on the logistics industry were discussed. Interesting for the port with regard to the fish processing plant, which is operating at the site, as well as possible future transport flows between the British Isles and Mukran.

Afterwards, Mukran Port participated in a virtual session at the One Million Club organized by UTLC ERA with the support of CCTT. The managing director of Mukran Port Harm Sievers presented the multimodal solutions in China-Europe container transport to more than 100 other participants, which are successfully implemented jointly by Mukran Port, Bahnoperator, Port of Karlshamn and others involved. Other speakers with their qualified speeches and interesting presentations also ensured that the event was exciting and educational.

Seamlessly, we then moved on to the first official edition of "Coffee-table gossip - a virtual coffee break". At this event in the new Project Logistics Alliance format, we met specialists from our field in virtual meeting rooms with tables for 2, 4 or more to discuss the latest industry news, business cases or the pros and cons of working from home. A great opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with already known partners and friends.

Last but not least: Webinar on Capacity Building Road and Rail Agreements organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) with the support of CCTT as a part of the UN-wide Development Account Project "Transport and Trade Connectivity in the Age of Pandemics". Discussions were held on the cooperation measures required at the regional level, which may be necessary to support the formulation of crisis response proposals in Asia and the Pacific.

Dragon-powered locomotive for Silk Road transports

Sassnitz-Mukran, 18.12.2020 -The Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam mbH (EGP for short) presented the new design for one of its smartrons at Mukran Port yesterday. In cooperation with Railcolor-Ziemon, DBO bahnoperator GmbH as well as partners of the Mukran Port Group a design was created that reflects the philosophy of all three parties involved as well as the theme of the new Silk Road via the Mukran hub.

In November 2019, the first trial transport started on the new alternative Silk Road from Mukran to Mannheim under the Belt and Road Initiative. Thanks to the successful project development, the product, in addition to transport services within Germany, is now also trafficked directly to Rotterdam. EGP provides the rail services in Germany for the Mukran Port Group. Only Smartron electric locomotives from Siemens are used. These pull the trains, some of which are up to 740 metres long and carry up to 50 x 40-foot containers, not only quickly but also in a climate-friendly manner across Germany and Europe.

"No matter if cargo ship, offshore service vessel or cruise ship - with this small gesture we want to show all sailors of the crews that despite the fact that they have to stay on board, we still think of them. They are the ones who keep international freight traffic running and they do a great job indeed," said Harm Sievers, chairman of Port Sassnitz-Mukran e.V. Mukran Port: More sustainable mobility for all

Sassnitz-Mukran, February 03, 2020 - A joint meeting of representatives of Mukran Port, Verkehrsgesellschaft Vorpommern-Rügen mbH (VVR) and the local shipping companies will lead to an improved connection of the location to the local public transport system. With this measure, cruise and ferry passengers will in future be able to explore Germany's largest island more easily.

In times of climate change and the idea of sustainability, an increasingly green trend can also be seen in the tourism industry. For the discussion partners, this development is particularly apparent in the declining numbers of guests travelling by car or plane. Especially tourists from the Scandinavian countries increasingly use the existing train and ferry connections. A strong indication is the increase in the load factor and the significantly higher number of departures of the night train Malmö-Berlin via the ferry connection Trelleborg-Sassnitz.
